While fishing used to be a way of supporting oneself, wealthy London tourists have now descended and are displacing the locals, whose livelihood is thus threatened. The relationship between brothers Steven and Martin is also strained. Martin is a fisherman without a boat, since Steven started using it for far more lucrative tours for all the day-trippers. They’ve sold the family cottage and now it seems that the final battle to be fought is that with the new owners over the parking space next to the sea. Yet the situation soon gets out of hand, and not just because of the wheel clamp. Bait is a black-and-white film shot on hand-processed 16mm. Numerous close-ups of fish, nets, lobsters, wellington boots, knots and catch baskets bring to mind the theory of a montage of attractions. The depiction of the different social strata – one could speak of class relations – is also reminiscent of the tradition of social realism in British cinema. Above all, however, a whole lot of current political relevance is waiting to be discovered beneath the different layers of film historical references contained in the images.
纽约百老汇，戏剧导演Oscar Jaffe（约翰·巴里摩尔 John Barrymore 饰）捧红了女演员Lily Garland（卡洛·朗白 Carole Lombard 饰），两人成为百老汇票房保证，同时也是一对情侣。合作三年后，Lily因为受不了Oscar对她私人生活的过度干预，偷偷跑去了好莱坞演电影。Oscar一怒之下起用了新的女演员，可惜票房很差，还在芝加哥欠下了债。在从芝加哥回纽约的二十世纪列车上，Oscar机缘巧合又和Lily在同一列火车上。Oscar试图挽回Lily，不管是爱情还是演戏，但Lily已经有了另外的恋人，也对重新和Oscar合作不感兴趣。这列火车上碰巧有一位脑子不大好使的大富翁，Oscar利用这个富翁给他开了张支票，试图以这张支票来让Lily签了演戏的合约。然而这位所谓“大富翁”原来不过是个精神病人，Oscar手中的支票毫无价值。心灰意冷的Oscar决定开枪自尽......
